In 1973 Blumer and Katz came developed 'The uses and gratification theory' arguing audiences consume media text for one or more of the four reasons.

- socialisation (replacing human relationships)
- surveillance
BUT
because the 'news' you see on the tv, online in newspapers is also a 'product' that has to sell a target audience, it can also be entertaining and this may distract the facts.
What is fake news?
Fake news can be based on a true idea, or half truths but ultimately it is fake/untrue and has been released to influence opinion or annoy people.
