Uses and gratification

Bummer and katz reaserched how and why people select certain media products over others. They came up with four main uses: -Entertainment  -Relationships -Personal information -Identity  entertainment offers distraction to the world. personal identity helps us consider who we are. relationships when we find things we can share and discuss with others. information is new information we want to know or take pleasure in knowing.

Thursday 14th June LO:   To explain how vertical interrogation benefits companies; to analyse using uses and gratification theory. 5 examples of recent films/video game releases: Super mario bros Frozen Barbie  Moshi monsters Harry Potter Profit maximised- the promotion of a film will create a reciptive awareness in potential consumers of the game. Familiarity-The brand and plot and characters are already known. Extends the pleasure of the film- a chance to continue to 'be a part of' the film that we enjoyed. The game promotes the film, the film the game- efficient use of marketing of both products and increases potential audience as fans 'crossover' between the two platforms.

Intergration What are the building blocks of success? When a brand will create useful or entertaining content targeted at consumers that will soon be in a position to pay for the company's services/products. What did lego do right? The company brought in Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (the 2 directors) to create a genuinely funny and clever movie. How has it laid the foundation for future success? The benefits of this Lego film are not just limited to the supportive spending of adults either. What makes a children's movie such an enduring legacy is that it firstly finds its excitable audience in the cinema, then the young viewers eagerly snap up a DVD that can be viewed several times over and will probably sit in the dvd collection for years.
